Recognizing that litter is a key issue in our province, Divert NS completed a roadside litter audit in 2021 that showed that cigarette butts are the number one piece of small litter found on roadsides, accounting for 32% of all small litter collected.

Attention producers of packaging, paper products, and packaging-like products: Our online Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) program Portal is now live. If you are a producer of paper, glass, metal or plastic, or a combination of these materials, you may fall under Nova Scotia’s new EPR for PPP program.

On November 1, 2023, Divert NS hosted the 23rd annual Mobius Awards of Environmental Excellence Gala at the Halifax Convention Centre to recognize and celebrate Nova Scotia’s environmental champions. Featuring keynote speaker, Anthony Morgan (CBC’s The Nature of the Things).

Divert NS is overseeing a more efficient and effective curbside recycling program that will shift responsibility for curbside recycling from municipalities to the producers of packaging and paper products. This new approach will reduce the amount of waste disposed in landfills and incentivize producers to meet stricter recycling targets and reduce consumer packaging.

Congratulations to New Minas Recycling, the 2023 Large Enviro-Depot™ of the Year and Eastern Shore Cartage, the 2023 Small Enviro-Depot™ of the Year! These annual awards celebrate Enviro-Depots across Nova Scotia that go above and beyond in customer service, employee relations, and community support.

Waste Reduction Week happens during the third week of October during Circular Economy Month. By focusing our efforts on extending the life of our products and materials through swapping, sharing, thrifting, and repairing, we are reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill and contributing to the circular economy.
