About Us

Leading Nova Scotians to a sustainable, wasteless future.

Who We Are

Created in 1996 and regulated by Nova Scotia Environment and Climate Change, Divert NS is a not-for-profit corporation championing recycling and resource recovery in Nova Scotia. For over 25 years, we’ve helped build a culture of recycling through environmental stewardship, funding, and education, helping to make Nova Scotia a recognized global innovator in waste diversion solutions.

Our Mission is to improve our environment, economy, and quality of life by working with Nova Scotians to reduce, reuse, recycle, and recover resources.

Beverage Container Recycling

Established in 1996 through the NS Solid Waste Resource Management Regulations, Nova Scotia’s beverage container deposit-refund program is operated by Divert NS and applies to all ready-to-serve beverage containers with some exceptions. We partner with locally owned and operated Enviro-Depots across the province, who collect the beverage containers and pay the refunds on our behalf.

Used Tire Recycling

Nova Scotia’s tire recycling program was established in 1997 through the NS Solid Waste Resource Management Regulations and is operated by Divert NS. End-of-life passenger and bicycle tires sold within the province of Nova Scotia are diverted from landfill disposal and with the help of tire retailers and bicycle shops, are recycled and converted into tire derived aggregate and fuel.

EPR Oversight

Divert NS oversees the extended producer responsibility program for packaging, paper products, and other blue bag material recycling in the province. Nova Scotia Environment and Climate Change appointed Divert NS to administer the program through the Environment Goals and Climate Change Reduction Act in 2023, which places responsibility for curbside recycling programs on the producers of recyclable packaging and paper products.

Education

To engage Nova Scotians in our mandate of reducing, reusing, recycling, and recovering resources, Divert NS delivers education and awareness programs, focusing on environmental and solid waste issues here in Nova Scotia and beyond. Divert NS develops free classroom activities and engaging videos and activities, and funds waste educators in every municipality across the province.

How We Do It

Divert NS does not receive any government funding — we’re entirely self-sustaining through the environmental fees collected from our programs and the sale of recyclable materials. Over 70 percent of this revenue goes back to municipalities around the province to support waste diversion programs in your community.

Why We Do It

Did you know that Canada’s solid waste landfills are responsible for approximately 23% of the country’s methane emissions, which is a potent greenhouse gas with at least 28 times the warming potential of carbon dioxide.

Our recycling programs, carried out by everyday Nova Scotians, stop a wide range of materials from being disposed in our provincial landfills. Waste reduction helps to preserve valuable resources, like energy and time. This contributes to the circular economy — a positive system that phases out waste and pollution by using what we already have.
