Divert NS Sponsor a Student Intern Series

Each year, Divert NS provides a bursary and work placement opportunity to a NSCC student in the Natural Resources Environmental Technology or Environmental Engineering Technology programs. This year’s recipient is Gerardo Velez, who is entering his second year in Natural Resources Technology. As part of his internship, Gerardo will be a contributing WNN reporter, reporting on areas of waste management that are important to him.

Cleaning up litter not only improves the aesthetics of our beautiful province, but it also plays a vital role in protecting the health of our environment and wildlife. Plastics and other litter pose severe threats in coastal areas, persisting for decades and endangering marine life through ingestion and entanglement. This endangers the health of local ecosystems and species such as birds, seals, and whales. By consistently removing debris like fishing gear and plastic waste from roads, parks, and beaches, we can enhance wildlife conservation efforts and reduce our ecological impact.

On June 5th, 2024, Divert NS staff organized their annual litter clean-up in Kemptown. The team focused on cleaning up the exit ramps and surrounding roads leading to the Divert NS warehouse on Mingo Rd. Within two hours, staff collected 350 pounds of litter, removing commonly littered items such as coffee cups, plastic bottles, and cans from the roadside. Staff also found some unusual items including a croc shoe, a flag, and a hotel key card.

In an effort to tackle litter in the province, Divert NS supports both the NS Adopt A Highway and The Great NS Pick Me Up litter programs that are facilitated by Coastal Action. These programs encourage community groups and workplaces to organize litter cleanups, provide resources such as gloves and bags, and enable participants to report data on the litter collected, thereby contributing to long-term conservation efforts.

Organizing or participating in local cleanups helps beautify our surroundings and plays a crucial role in safeguarding Nova Scotia’s natural environment. By taking part in these initiatives, individuals and organizations alike can make a difference in preserving the environment for future generations.
