About Divert NS

Leading Nova Scotians to a sustainable, wasteless future.

Who We Are

Created in 1996 and regulated by Nova Scotia Environment and Climate Change to manage the Beverage Container Deposit-Refund Program and the Used Tire Management Program, Divert NS is a not-for-profit corporation championing recycling and resource recovery in Nova Scotia. For almost 30 years, we’ve helped build a culture of recycling through environmental stewardship, funding, and education, helping to make Nova Scotia a recognized global innovator in waste diversion solutions.

In 2023, Nova Scotia Environment and Climate Change appointed Divert NS to administer the Extended Producer Responsibility regulations for packaging, paper products, and packaging-like products, which places responsibility for curbside recycling programs on the producers of recyclable packaging and paper products.

Our Mission is to improve our environment, economy, and quality of life by working with Nova Scotians to reduce, reuse, recycle, and recover resources.

Beverage Container Recycling

Established in 1996 through the NS Solid Waste Resource Management Regulations, Nova Scotia’s Beverage Container Deposit-Refund Program is operated by Divert NS and applies to all ready-to-serve beverage containers with some exceptions. We partner with locally owned and operated Enviro-Depots across the province, who collect the beverage containers and pay the refunds on our behalf. Materials are then processed and reused within a wide variety of materials including new beverage containers.

Used Tire Recycling

Tires sold within Nova Scotia are diverted from landfill through the Used Tire Management Program, operated by Divert NS through the NS Solid Waste Resource Management Regulations. End-of-life passenger and bicycle tires can be returned to any tire retailer or bicycle shop within Nova Scotia and are then recycled and converted into tire-derived aggregate and fuel for use in a wide variety of materials and projects.

EPR Oversight

Divert NS oversees the Extended Producer Responsibility program for the recycling of packaging, paper products, and packaging-like products (EPR for PPP). This program will shift the responsibility for curbside recycling in Nova Scotia to the producers of the recyclable products, which will standardize recycling programs in the province, reduce the amount of waste disposed in landfills, and incentivize producers to reduce consumer packaging.

Funding & Awards

From funding student research grants and innovative waste solutions to supporting municipal waste educators and regional waste diversion activities, Divert NS utilizes revenue from its beverage container and tire recycling programs to invest in waste diversion efforts across Nova Scotia. In addition to funding practical and research-based solutions, Divert NS recognizes and celebrates environmental leadership through initiatives like the Champion of the Environment Scholarship and the Mobius Awards of Environmental Excellence, which honour outstanding achievements in sustainability, education, and waste reduction.

Education

To engage Nova Scotians in our mandate of reducing, reusing, recycling, and recovering resources, Divert NS delivers education and awareness programs, focusing on environmental and solid waste issues here in Nova Scotia and beyond. Divert NS develops free classroom activities and lesson plans, engaging videos, and funds waste educators in every municipality across the province.

How We Do It

Divert NS does not receive any government funding — we’re entirely self-sustaining through the environmental fees collected from our programs and the sale of recyclable materials. Over 70 percent of this revenue goes back to municipalities around the province to support waste diversion programs in your community.

Why We Do It

Did you know that Canada’s solid waste landfills are responsible for approximately 23% of the country’s methane emissions, which is a potent greenhouse gas with at least 28 times the warming potential of carbon dioxide.

Our recycling programs, carried out by everyday Nova Scotians, stop a wide range of materials from being disposed in our provincial landfills. Waste reduction helps to preserve valuable resources, like energy and time. This contributes to the circular economy — a positive system that phases out waste and pollution by using what we already have.
