Haley Street Adult Services Centre Society (HSASCS) is a vocational centre for adults with disabilities serving people from the local communities of North Sydney, Sydney Mines and other parts of the Cape Breton Regional Municipality. The Centre serves 63 participants, employs 24 staff, and has a waitlist for service. In 2009, HSASCS received a grant from Divert NS to purchase equipment that would allow participants to recycle wooden pallets for resale and as kindling for new pallets. With their latest grant, they will be able to turn the small scraps of wood otherwise unusable for other projects into wood pellets. Not only will this reduce waste, but it also helps to alleviate a shortage in wood pellets in the Cape Breton area.
