The new EPR for PPP program is part of Nova Scotia’s plan to reduce waste disposal rates and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Shifting the responsibility for recycling to producers will save Nova Scotia municipalities an estimated $20-25 million annually.
The blue bag programs currently operated by municipalities will be assumed by a producer responsibility organization (PRO) that will act on behalf of the various packaging producers. This means that municipalities will no longer be responsible for funding and operating the curbside recycling programs by December 1, 2025.
The role of Municipalities
The first step in Phase 1 of the transition to an industry-led program requires municipalities to register and provide data on their curbside recycling programs.
Phase 1 actions will inform a workable plan to transition municipal recycling programs to the producers.
Nova Scotia municipalities have been provided with detailed information and resources to support them in the registration and data collection process.
A webinar was recently held to support municipalities in the registration process. If you would like a copy of the webinar, or have any other questions, please contact EPRSupport@divertns.ca.
