Kemptown Processing Centre
To support our beverage container recycling program, Divert NS owns and manages a processing facility in Kemptown, NS. The facility is used for bailing plastic and aluminum beverage containers, which are then sold as raw materials to be further recycled and repurposed.
Nearly 80% of the containers collected across Nova Scotia through the beverage container recycling program are transported to this facility for further processing.
Collecting those beverages containers is a big job. In 2012, Divert NS worked with an equipment manufacturer to design the first of its kind compaction trailer that compacted beverage containers on site at Enviro-Depots, before shipping direct to market or to our Kemptown facility for baling. These new trailers streamlined collection and dramatically reduced greenhouse gas emissions. In 2014, Divert NS purchased three more compaction trailers and now services all Enviro-Depots along main roadways across the province. In one year, the compaction trailers save over 400 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions.
Middleton Bottle Depot
In August 2015, Divert NS established operation of the Middleton Bottle Depot in the Annapolis Valley region. The ENVIRO-DEPOT™, owned and operated by Divert NS, provides insight into the operations of running a depot, the challenges our ENVIRO-DEPOT™ partners face and the feasibility of available opportunities to improve processes and enhance customer experience.
