Bin Guidelines & Suppliers

Learn more about community recycling separation and where to buy bins.

Guidelines for Public Spaces

Separation containers (bins) should be accessible, clean and easily identifiable. The colour, shape and size of the bins can improve their effectiveness. The following bin tips can help you make the best use of your waste sorting station.

  • All bin openings should be accessible to everyone.
  • Slant the top of the bin, so waste cannot be left unsorted.
  • Line garbage containers with clear plastic bags so waste can be easily identified. When full, the organics must be emptied into the green bin and the bag put in the garbage.
  • Cluster bins together in a central location to make sure the separation process is straightforward.
  • Leave the garbage opening uncovered. Making this more convenient encourages fewer cross-contamination mistakes in recycling and organic waste.
