The average piece of clothing is only worn 7 to 10 times and then discarded. In Nova Scotia alone, we throw out 55 kg of textiles per person each year. Not only does this take up significant space in our landfills, but purchasing new clothing requires water, energy, and other resources.

Buying second-hand and thrifting is one way to help reduce our textile waste problem. It’s a great way to shop for one-of-a-kind outfits at a fraction of the cost. It also saves clothing from landfill and reduces the need to manufacture brand-new outfits.  Watch our video below to learn more about the issue of textile waste and how thrifting can help make a difference. 

About Waste Reduction Week & Circular Economy Month

For over 20 years, Divert NS has been celebrating Waste Reduction Week in Canada. Waste Reduction Week happens each year in October during Circular Economy Month. By focusing our efforts on extending the life of our products and materials through swapping, sharing, thrifting, and repairing, we are reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill and contributing to the circular economy.
